Background of the Study

Rhetorical strategies are essential in crafting persuasive discourse, particularly in political speeches where language is used to influence public opinion and mobilize support. In Igbo political speeches delivered in Enugu, speakers often employ various rhetorical devices—such as repetition, parallelism, and emotional appeals—to enhance persuasion. These strategies are deeply rooted in cultural traditions and reflect the values and ideologies of the Igbo community (Okafor, 2023). Persuasive discourse in the political arena not only informs but also shapes voter attitudes and public policy. This study examines how different rhetorical strategies contribute to the overall persuasive effect of Igbo political speeches. By analyzing transcripts of political speeches and applying both qualitative discourse analysis and quantitative measures such as frequency counts and impact ratings, the research aims to determine the most effective techniques for persuasion. This investigation will also consider the role of non-verbal cues and audience reception in reinforcing the rhetorical message, ultimately contributing to a comprehensive model of persuasive political communication.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of rhetorical strategies in political discourse, there is limited research focusing on Igbo political speeches in Enugu. Existing studies often overlook the cultural nuances and specific rhetorical devices that characterize Igbo political communication. This gap limits our understanding of how persuasive discourse is constructed and received by the audience. Without a clear analysis of these rhetorical strategies, political messages may be misinterpreted or less effective, undermining democratic processes. Addressing this issue is essential to improve both theoretical models and practical applications in political communication (Okafor, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify and classify rhetorical strategies in Igbo political speeches.

2. To evaluate the persuasive impact of these strategies.

3. To develop recommendations for effective political communication.

Research Questions:

1. What rhetorical strategies are most prevalent in Igbo political speeches?

2. How do these strategies influence audience perception and persuasion?

3. What improvements can be made to enhance the persuasive impact of political discourse?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it provides insights into the rhetorical mechanisms underlying Igbo political discourse in Enugu, offering valuable guidance for political communicators and policymakers. The findings will enhance persuasive communication strategies and contribute to improved democratic engagement (Okafor, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study focuses on Igbo political speeches in Enugu and does not address speeches in other languages or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

• Rhetorical Strategies: Techniques used to persuade and influence an audience.

• Persuasive Discourse: Language aimed at convincing others.

• Political Speeches: Public addresses delivered by political figures.
